Say Goodbye to Period Pain

Updated: Dec 9, 2019

Yes, it's that time of the month again, and it brings all the cramps with it.

In TCM, when there is a blockage of fluids, heat, cold, blood, Qi (or anything else for that matter) - we ultimately experience pain and disease. These blockages are known as stagnation. When there is excess, there are extra things causing stagnation, thus leading to discomfort. On the other hand, when there is deficiency, the lack can cause similar issues. If you suffer from period pain, it is worth noting which is root cause is responsible for your troubles so that you can take the appropriate healing measures:

Pain before menses: Qi or blood stagnation
Pain during menses: Blood heat - Cold stagnation
Pain after menses: Blood deficiency

TCM Recommendations:

Firstly, you can use the point shown in the picture.

How to locate SP6:

Four fingers above the inner ankle of the foot, in the depression under the bone (tibia). Apply pressure and massage. It can be done on both legs.

You can gently massage the points shown above for 2-3 minutes until you feel relieved.

Note: DO NOT use the acupressure points without a consultation from a licensed acupuncturists during the pregnancy. Some of those points are strictly contraindicated and can cause serious problems  during the period of pregnancy.

Secondly, make sure you are exercising on a regular basis. Yes, we hear that exercise is always a good thing to avoid health issues, but in this case, it helps move the Qi (energy), and Blood so that there are no Qi/Blood stagnation which can cause.

Of course, if you’re cramps are to a point that they are not tolerable and/or if they are not getting better with different tactics, it is highly suggested that you visit an Acupuncturist or TCM Practitioner.
